Apostrophe catastrophe

India, apparently, has a lot of people who are good at English. Anyone who has seen recent use of English in general would do well to take exception to this. So many times these days I see an apostrophe used in the wrong place.

For those who have forgotten their grammar, an apostrophe is used to signify belonging and in some cases (preferably avoided) a shortening of two words into one. There are so many signboards, across India (I have seen them in Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Delhi), where the apostrophe is used in a plural. “Coconut’s” means belonging to the coconut (make sure spelling is right; a board in Ahmedabad got it horribly wrong) and not a number of them.

Most of these people are convent-educated, graduates. Even aspirants of MS programmes in the US have been known to make such errors, as well as MBAs (and not MBA’s) from some of India’s (note correct usage) premier institutes. I hope the situation improves, for everytime I see such errors I feel it is an apostrophe apocalypse.

Anyone publishing anything in the newspaper (including reporters-some are incapable of stringing an entire sentence in English) or making a board should please be careful.

P.S: Let me know what you think of this article. Also, anyone pointing errors in this article will be duly mentioned alongside the correction.

UPDATE:  An Oatmeal link that explains it clearly (Thanks to Shivani Rege)

Delhi Times – and a topic for research

Was in Delhi for two days for my induction. A nice bunch of people, a fun party in the latest night club in Delhi. I had a rocking time.

Also, found my next topic of research, and one that will surely lead to my first (of many Nature papers)- “The degeneration of dancing style as a function of alcohol ingestion in Indian people”. What I noted was amazing – makes me want to read more about human psychology. My twitter feed says – “Wish Hannibal Lecter was here to analyze what is going on in the minds of these people dancing.”

Remembering or Why I decided against a PhD

Add to this..."I got results", "I got into IIMA"

Every once in a while, I have the urge to do a PhD. I think , “how nice it will be to have a relaxed life and a PhD in a stream that I like.” Then I go to IISc and remember exactly why I gave up on the idea of a PhD.

Sometimes it helps to go back to where it all began (or ended):P.

The IISc Alumni Association has been very helpful though.

Go Goa

Went to Goa for a 4-day trip. Spent exactly 42.5 minutes on beach (in total). Visited my native place. Chetana joined us there and had a couple of wonderful days there with her.

Spent (wasted!) much much more time visiting temples. Had lots of fish (but no booze!).

Hope to have a more fruitful (beachful, boozeful, all-kinds-of-nonvegful)Goa trip sometime.

Sing for the moment

She had been tired and unwell and upset that weekend two years ago. Then on Monday, he asked her a question she had not at all expected. Don’t think Eminem was telling him “If you had one shot, one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted, in one moment, would you capture it or let it slip?”

He felt at peace after a long time. She went home, he sat at the library he ran on campus with some friends.

Just thinking about the way my life is going now…

When it rains, it pours!!

The Perfect 10

And I’m not talking about Nadia Comaneci.

Seven months ago she sent an SMS, “You were perfect today.”
He did not…she has always been perfect.

I knew then, as I know now…

A year ago, my throat sore with a horrible infection, my head spinning and stomach hurting from all the coughing, I said “I know”. How wrong I was!! I didn’t know anything, how my life would change, the experiences of the last year (happy and sad), decisions made and unmade and remade…the disappointments and the exultation of achievement, one thing has remained unchanged…in fact grown stronger.
My answer though, remains “I know”.
And that I belonged to a stage in human evolution thats a step or two behind the rest of the world 😛 (this is what you call an ‘inside’ joke being made public).

I wonder why…

Went to the library at IIMA today…to borrow books from which I need to revise for placements.
The only thing that is on anyone’s mind these days…placements. maybe next week the short quizzes might take our minds off it once in a while.
Browsed books on probability and time series analysis…borrowed a couple of books.
Wondered what I was doing here…I loved these things so much. Reminded myself that this was what I wanted to do and that finance was probably my best chance of actually working on these things.
Blogging more frequently these days…maybe more on the current affairs soon.

A little break…

A 3-day break from WIMWI…a hurriedly arranged, tremendously anticipated visit to Bangalore.
Wanting to fill as much in every day as we could…to meet as many people as I could.
Thesis accepted pending small corrections for the award of the MSc degree.
Had really good coffee after almost 40 days, walked at Sankey, roamed Malleshwaram.

Then something unexpected, unwanted, horrific.
Somethings change your life, your outlook towards life.
Make what is REALLY IMPORTANT very clear. This was one of them.
